Mineral and spice-accented dark berry and cherry aromas are complemented by a smoky nuance that builds with air. Concentrated blackberry and bitter cherry flavors show very good depth and take a sweeter turn on the back half. Finishes emphatically spicy and quite long, with supple, well-knit tannins lending shape to clinging cherry and floral pastille notes.
The Domaine St. Joseph is a product of the family's origins in Mauves and Jean-Louis' now decade-plus long project to restore ancient terraces long abandoned within the appellation. Sourced from the historic villages of the appellation before it was expanded, Jean-Louis has holdings in Tournon, Mauves, St-Jean-de-Muzols, and Lemps. The wine is fermented in a combination of tonneaux and stainless steel before it is aged in mostly neutral oak for a little over a year.
