Alella is Spain's smallest DO, 15 kilometers north of Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast, where granite soils and a mild sea-influenced climate have produced wine since Roman times. The Marfil brand — ivory in Catalan — has been the defining label of Alella Vinícola since the 1920s, and the Super Marfil is their most distinctive expression: a wine revived from the mid-20th century, when production ceased and was only recently recommenced in tiny quantities. Made from 100% Pansa Blanca (the local name for Xarel·lo) and produced ecologically without herbicides, insecticides, or inorganic fertilizers, it is a wine of complexity and age: dark golden in color, with a ripe and intense nose of dried fruits, floral nuances, and grape character, and a palate of fine nutty intensity with a long, complex finish. At 14% ABV, it is full-bodied and genuinely distinctive — an extraordinary aperitif or a match for rich and savory dishes.
Food Pairings: Consommé and rich soups, foie gras, aged cheeses, blue fish, game, roasted white meats, Asian cuisine
