Feket Pince Hárslevelű is a dry, traditionally-styled Hungarian white wine with light natural reductive notes on the front of the nose, then transitioning to orange blossom, chamomile tea, apricot, peach flesh, orange peel, and light honey suckle. The palate is smooth from the ample acidity and then texturally lush from the light skin contact and unfiltered lees. Characteristics of apricot, peach, pear, and honeysuckle travel along a backbone of volcanic minerailty and electric acidity; the finish is sapid, mineral, saline, lightly smoky, and dancing with white pepper. The vineyards grow on the southern slope of a dormant underwater volcano that rose high up above the plain. The fermentation occurred in large, old 1,000-1,200L Hungarian oak casks. The aging lasted10-18 months in old oak, followed by 2-4 years of reductive maturation in stainless still tanks to allow the youthful acidity to calm into a beautifully structured wine.
Food Pairing: roast pork with apples, Hungarian chicken paprikash, curries, peanut satay sauces, spiced poultry, vegetarian dishes laden with hummus or baba ghanoush, carrot-ginger soup, roasted root vegetables, strong blue cheese, aged hard cheeses.
Fekete is the esteemed winery by Mr Béla Fekete, the ‘Grand Old Man of Somló’, is still helmed by the 96 year old legend, but he has given the reigns to Gábor Riesz and Ákos–teaching them his winemaking methods. The history of the winery is well-preserved and the depth expressed in each vintage is as exciting as the last.
