Heidi Schrock & Sohne Gelber Muskateller

Heidi Schröck took over her family's estate in the historic lakeside village of Rust in 1983 and has since become one of Austria's most celebrated winemakers — named Falstaff Vintner of the Year in 2003. She farms south-facing vineyards in a natural amphitheatre around Lake Neusiedl with her twin sons Johannes and Georg, on sandy, loamy soils rich in calcium. The Gelber Muskateller — known locally as "Weirer" for its frankincense-like nutmeg aromas — sees five days of skin contact before pressing and nine months in large acacia casks, yielding a wine of real textural depth. Green apple, papaya, pineapple, white flowers, peppermint, and flint dominate, with a salty minerality and a finish that lingers and lingers.
