Immich-Batterieberg is one of Germany's most storied estates, with roots in Enkirch on the Mosel dating back to 908 AD and vineyards that the Prussian tax authorities ranked among the finest in the country in 1868. Today the estate is guided by winemaker Gernot Kollmann, who since 2008 has been restoring its steep slate grand cru parcels with organic viticulture, ambient yeasts, and minimal additions. The Elbling is a departure from the estate's flagship Rieslings: sourced from 50-year-old vines on Muschelkalk (shell limestone) soils, fermented in stainless steel and kept on fine lees until bottling, it is a light, pure, lemon-fresh white of remarkable delicacy — like a sparkling wine without the bubbles, with a creamy lees texture and crystalline mineral finish. Elbling is one of Germany's oldest grape varieties, predating Riesling on the Mosel.
Food Pairing: Blue mussels, grilled sole, oysters, light fish dishes, charcuterie.
