Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage 2023

Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage 2023 is a journey of black fruit, smoked bacon, black peppercorn, incense, notes derived from the granite slopes and barreling. Destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, twelve months in barrel (20% new), bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Château de Saint Cosme is the benchmark estate of Gigondas, in Barruol family hands since 1490; Louis Barruol took over in 1992 and converted to biodynamics in 2010. Wines from purchased fruit carry the shorter "Saint Cosme" label. Sérine has looser, more oval bunches than modern Syrah clones and gives a markedly more aromatic wine.

Food pairing: Grilled or smoked meat, roasted mushrooms and onions, seared venison or beef with black pepper and thyme, or a Moroccan tagine.
