País is one of the oldest grape varieties in the Americas — brought to Chile by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century — and for most of its history it was treated as a bulk wine grape, destined for cheap Pipeno (a traditional slightly cloudy, lightly sparkling Chilean wine) rather than serious bottles. That changed as a new generation of Chilean winemakers began recognizing the extraordinary value of País's ancient dry-farmed bush vines on the granitic soils of Maule.
