Vodka

Strawberry Collins

June is the two weeks when local strawberries are actually worth buying. This is the drink to spend them on — the vodka gets out of the way and lets the fruit talk.

Ingredients

  • 2 ozVodka
  • ¾ ozFresh lemon juice
  • ½ ozSimple syrup
  • 4Ripe strawberries
  • 2 ozSoda water

Method

  • Hull the strawberries and muddle them with the syrup in the bottom of a shaker.
  • Add vodka, lemon and ice. Shake hard for 12 seconds.
  • Strain into a tall glass over fresh ice and top with soda. Don't stir.

Rum

Daiquiri

Three ingredients, no blender, nothing frozen. Most people think they don't like a daiquiri because they've only met one in a plastic cup at a resort.

Ingredients

  • 2 ozWhite rum
  • ¾ ozFresh lime juice
  • ¾ ozSimple syrup

Method

  • Put a coupe in the freezer while you measure. It matters more than it sounds.
  • Shake everything with plenty of ice, hard, for 12 seconds.
  • Double-strain into the cold glass. Drink it before it warms.

Bourbon

Whiskey Smash

Bourbon in June, made possible by a fistful of mint and half a lemon. Somewhere between a julep and a sour, and easier than both.

Ingredients

  • 2 ozBourbon
  • ¾ ozFresh lemon juice
  • ½ ozSimple syrup
  • 10Mint leaves

Method

  • Press the mint gently into the lemon and syrup — bruise it, don't shred it.
  • Add bourbon and ice. Shake for 10 seconds.
  • Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Slap the mint sprig and lay it on top.

Rosé

La Piscine

Rosé poured over a full glass of ice, the way it's drunk on the Riviera all summer. It dilutes, and that's the point — it's meant to last an afternoon.

Ingredients

  • 4 ozDry rosé
  • SplashSoda water (optional)
  • 1Wide strip of orange peel

Method

  • Fill a large wine glass with ice. All the way — this is the whole idea.
  • Pour the rosé over it. Add soda only if you want it longer.
  • Twist the orange peel over the surface, then drop it in.
