Montauk Distilling 71st Regiment Gin

The palate is rich and balanced, opening with floral juniper, crisp citrus, and mint leaf; the botanical undertones express honeysuckle, sweet rose petal, and calming lavender, while the finish bursts with light peppercorn.

Leucio Iacobelli transformed his Hampton Rum Co. into Montauk Distilling and made the old Riverhead firehouse its home base, infusing locally sourced botanicals into the lineup. The gin takes its name from New York's 71st Regiment — part of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, who bivouacked at Montauk on their return from Cuba — and has been decorated with gold at competition.

Cocktail suggestion: It also makes a clean, citrus-forward gin and tonic and an entirely respectable Negroni; The house serve is straightforward: gin, lime, simple syrup, and white cranberry, with Tajín on the rim.
