Pax Mahle Wines Chenin Blanc Helios

Pax Mahle founded his Sebastopol winery in 2000 with cool-climate Syrah as his focus, but his Chenin Blanc has become one of California's most compelling arguments that world-class Chenin isn't exclusively a Loire Valley phenomenon. Helios is a multi-vineyard blend, drawing from organically farmed sites across three distinct California regions: Lyman Ranch in Amador County's Sierra Foothills for ripe, luscious golden fruit; Marine Terraces in the Santa Cruz Mountains for mineral precision and zesty acidity; and Alder Springs in Mendocino County for depth. All fruit is foot-crushed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in stainless steel and neutral oak to preserve freshness. The result is textured and broad yet vibrant — lemongrass, Bosc pear, green apple, stone fruit, grapefruit, and a chalky, crushed-seashell minerality that lingers. Rated 93 points by Jeb Dunnuck.
