Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, southeast of Montalcino, the Uccelliera estate was purchased in 1986 by winemaker Andrea Cortonesi from his friends and former employers at neighboring Ciacci Piccolomini. The estate’s loose and stony soil, coupled with a warm micro-climate, produces a rich and ripe expression of their wines, vintage after vintage. Andrea approaches wine-making tirelessly, with all vineyard work done exclusively by hand. In addition to Brunello, the estate also produces a very limited production of Rosso di Montalcino and a tiny-production Super Tuscan called “Rapace,”
This vintage is made from selected Sangiovese Grosso grapes from Brunello di Montalcino designated vineyards. The grapes are hand-picked by trained winery staff from the 14th to the 23rd of September, selected through careful management of the vegetative growth of the vines. After de-stemming, the grapes undergo cool temperatures for 7/8 days, allowing for the development of indigenous yeasts.
The resulting wine boasts a powerful nose and ripe, rich fruit with an exceptional expression of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. The wine is then aged in Slavonian and French oak vessels of various sizes for a minimum of 24 months followed by a further refinement in the bottle for a minimum of 6 months. This limited production wine showcases the characteristics of the appellation at its best, with its medium consistency, calcareous-clayey soil rich in minerals and structure, and good diurnal temperature variation during the summer months, encouraging a good ripening process.
Food Pairings: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, lamb in porchetta, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano, wild boar papardelle
