Open and expressive, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies bursts with aromas of cherries, smoked meats and forest floor. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a succulent core of fruit that's framed by supple, powdery tannins. This should drink well young.
The Beaune 1er Cru of Sizies was named after 13th century owner Renaud de Sessie, who owned tanneries in Beaune. It is located at the base of the Beaune slope. De Montille's Sizies vines are from a 1.6 hectares parcel with an average of 30-year-old vines. Deep clay soil over limestone. Certified organic, practicing biodynamic. 1/3 whole cluster fermentation, 2/3 destemmed. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2. Aged 14-18 months in barrel (20% new), then assembled to age additional months in stainless steel. Sizies is a parcel dominated by clay and tends to produce a generous, fruity and open wine that is friendly in its youth. The family considers Sizies to be the "introduction to De Montille."
